From Habana to the end of the world

More than twenty years ago, I met a Danish guy on my first visit to Cuba. Jan was living partly in Havana and partly in Denmark. It became a long-lasting friendship, and over the years, Jan would take me all over the big island, showing me the real Cuba. Both Jan and I were eager photographers, and our trips turned into a collection of 10,000 pictures documenting the lives of people living at the end of the world.

From Habana to Baracoa.

A journey through Cuba’s hardened soul

Traveling from the rhythmic heart of Havana to the lush, untamed edges of Baracoa is to trace the soul of Cuba—resilient, weathered, yet endlessly vibrant. In Habana, the crumbling colonial facades and classic cars speak of a bygone era, but the music, the people, and the passion are alive in every corner. As the road winds east, the scenery shifts—from the sun-soaked plains of Camagüey to the mountains of Guantánamo—each town carrying its own scars, stories, and stubborn beauty. Baracoa, Cuba’s oldest city, awaits at the end like a hidden whisper from the island’s roots—wrapped in mist, cocoa trees, and memories. This is not just a journey across land; it's a passage through Cuba's layered past and unbreakable spirit.

From Habana to the end of the world

Cuba is a land of resilience, where time stands still and music never fades.
Behind every weathered wall is a story of struggle, pride, and passion.
Hard lives, big smiles — the soul of Cuba shines through it all.

Waiting for a change

"Nobody talks about politics — the walls have ears," said the farmer, cigarette dangling from his lips during a quiet break.

You have to believe in something

Visiting graveyards and churches not only offers a glimpse into the island’s long and complex history, but also provides the opportunity to meet those who place their faith in God’s hands rather than the revolution. In these sacred spaces, the struggles and hopes of generations are quietly preserved, as the faithful continue to find solace in something beyond the changing tides of politics.

Time capsule

Every stop along the way was like a time capsule, preserving pieces of Cuba’s past in the most unexpected places.
